I really like the idea of Fenrik coming back to a vastly changed world, allowing the reader to discover the changes alongside him. You can always write the side book afterwards, filling in the gaps of what the other characters were up to in his absence.

Honestly, I'd probably write them side by side or have a very fleshed out rough done.
Fair enough. I was speaking more to release schedule. It would probably make sense to write them together though.
