Book Club Panel Discussion on "Dan the Destructor"
featuring Royce (A Drink with Crazy), Katie Roome (Periapsis Press), John A. Douglas & TJ Marquis
In case you missed it, Dan the Destructor, the first book in the Barbarians of the Storm saga was reviewed and discussed on a panel, last night. The livestream was simulcasted on multiple YouTube channels, which are linked at the bottom of this post, along with the panelists Twitter profiles.
When I first found out this was happening, I was a bit nervous, but I figured that everyone on this panel would be honest and fair. That being said, I was really happy with how everything went and what they said.
There was good, constructive criticism, most of which I didn’t disagree with. None of that criticism was that terrible or unfixable. Although, I was glad that John, who has read ahead of the first book, mentioned that a lot of the first book’s flaws were a lot less apparent in the second book, Atomic Beasts and Where to Kill Them.
I also like that they discussed the short story at the end of the book, as it is mostly overlooked in other people’s reviews. The short stories in all the books haven’t generated a lot of feedback, so it was nice to hear that they at least enjoyed this one.
I don’t want to say too much more, as I’d rather people watch the discussion and come to their own conclusions. So, please do! Also, discuss below in the comments.
Lastly, I only want to state that it was an honor to be the first author featured on this book club’s review streams, which I hope go on for a very long time. Many writers in the Iron Age movement could use more exposure. It’s hard as hell to get your stuff out there and seen by a large number of people, but as we all grow and gain traction, I think it’s up to those of us that can signal boost others doing solid work, to do just that. This is why I promoted other so hard, as my platform expanded quicker than I thought was possible. Granted, I’m on a bit of a break from that because of real life shit, but I plan to get back to it, albeit in a different way than before.
Anyway, that’s it. Go watch the livestream and help support these channels and the other creatives that you enjoy! And again, discuss in the comments below.

That intro to Xulgog/Foolpuddle short story is intense. It plays in your head like a medieval slasher movie starring goblins!
Congrats Rob! I think it went well and good to see you are taking criticism very professionally. I'm going to post a review (when the day job gives me a moment to work on it) and I do have plusses and negatives to discuss. John talking about your improvements in book 2 is great! The ultimate test - buy the rest of the series? I bought them last night and will do a book haul tweet when they arrive.
Can't wait to get to the book about Fenrik!
